If your BISP fingerprint verification failed, your payment is not cancelled. It is paused. The most reliable fix is to update your fingerprints at NADRA, then do biometric verification again for BISP. If your prints still do not match, BISP now accepts facial recognition verification with a certificate from NADRA. You can also register the failure at your BISP Tehsil Office. Never pay an agent to fix it. Helpline: 0800-26477. Official sites: bisp.gov.pk and 8171.bisp.gov.pk.

Why fingerprint verification fails
BISP payment, wallet activation and most office work need biometric proof. The machine scans your thumb. NADRA compares it with the print saved in its record. If the two do not match well enough, the system rejects it. The money stays in the programme. It does not go back, and no other person can take it.

Common causes:
- Worn fingerprints. Years of housework, farm work, dishwashing and manual labour wear the ridges down. This is the most common cause for older women.
- Dry, wet or dirty hands. Water, dust, oil, mehndi and rough skin can make a print unreadable on the day.
- Old NADRA record. Your record may hold a print scanned 10 or 15 years ago on an old machine.
- Device fault. The scanner glass may be dirty, or the machine at that camp or shop is faulty.
- Expired CNIC. Verification stops if the CNIC in the NADRA record has expired.
- Wrong finger or light press. The saved print is of one thumb. Pressing the other thumb, or pressing too lightly, will fail.
Step zero: simple checks before you travel
Do these on the same day, before you plan any visit.
- Wash your hands with soap and dry them fully.
- If your hands are very dry, wait a few minutes. Do not apply lotion just before a scan, and do not scan with wet or oily fingers.
- Clean the scanner surface. Ask the operator to wipe the glass and try again.
- Press the same thumb that NADRA has on record, flat and firm, for the full scan.
- Ask for a second machine. Camps and offices often have more than one device, and one faulty scanner fails everyone.
- Check your CNIC date. If it has expired, renew it at NADRA first. No retry will work on an expired CNIC.
If two or three proper tries fail on clean hands and a working machine, stop retrying at camps. Move to the fix routes below. Repeated failed attempts do not damage your record, but they waste your travel money.
Route 1: Retry at a different place on another day
Skin condition changes from day to day. A print that fails in the morning heat can pass on another day. If the failure happened at a payment camp or a retailer shop, try again at the BISP Tehsil Office device or at a bank ATM agent point on a different day, with clean and dry hands.
This route works for device faults and one-day skin problems. It will not fix a worn or old NADRA record.
Route 2: Update fingerprints at NADRA
This is the main fix, and the one BISP itself points women to. On 5 November 2025, in a BISP and NADRA meeting chaired by the BISP Chairperson, NADRA confirmed it will help beneficiaries whose biometric verification fails again and again. Your fingerprint record in NADRA is replaced with fresh scans, and BISP can then match them.

Steps at NADRA
- Go to your nearest NADRA Registration Centre. Carry your original CNIC.
- Take a token and tell the counter staff you need a fingerprint update for BISP biometric verification.
- NADRA staff will scan your fingers again and update the record against your CNIC.
- Ask for the printed slip or receipt and keep it safe.
- Wait for the record to update before you try BISP again. NADRA advises applicants to wait 24 hours after a failed biometric before trying again. For a full record update, allow up to 72 hours. No official time has been announced, so ask the counter for the wait time in your case.
- After the wait, do your BISP biometric verification again at the office, camp or wallet activation point, and complete your payment work.
NADRA fingerprint update steps and result
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Where | NADRA Registration Centre |
| Bring | Original CNIC |
| Ask for | Fingerprint update, also called biometric record update |
| Fee | Not officially announced. Ask at the counter and take the printed receipt |
| Wait after update | 24 to 72 hours is the safe window. No official time announced |
| Then | BISP biometric verification again |
Keep the NADRA receipt. If BISP verification still fails after the update, that receipt proves the update was done, and the BISP office can raise your case with it.
Route 3: Facial recognition verification
If your fingerprints are too worn to match even after an update, do not give up. This route opened in 2026.
NADRA told the National Assembly Standing Committee on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, as reported on 20 January 2026, that a beneficiary whose biometric and fingerprint verification fails can get a facial recognition certificate from NADRA by paying Rs. 20, and that certificate stays valid for 7 days. The same report said NADRA had proposed that BISP accept the certificate, and that NADRA will send SMS alerts to women when their biometric verification fails.

How to use this route
- Go to NADRA and explain that your BISP fingerprint verification has failed, even after a fingerprint update if you have done one.
- Ask for the facial recognition certificate. NADRA’s stated fee is Rs. 20, and the certificate is valid for 7 days.
- Take the certificate to BISP at once. Do not let the 7 days pass.
- BISP verifies you by face with the certificate, and your payment or wallet work proceeds.
- If the certificate expires before BISP completes the work, you will need a fresh one. Go to NADRA again.
BISP also uses facial verification in its own process. Its published beneficiary facial verification guide works with NADRA’s Pak ID app for record work. Ask at the Tehsil Office what applies in your district, as office practice can differ.
Route 4: Go to the BISP Tehsil Office

Go to the office when:
- Fingerprints failed at a camp, retailer or ATM.
- NADRA updated your record but BISP still shows failed.
- Your facial certificate expired before use.
- A payment was released but you could not collect it because of verification.
- Someone is demanding money to fix your verification.
At the office, staff check your CNIC on the BISP system, note the failed attempts, and guide you to the right route. They can also record a complaint in your name. Carry your original CNIC, your registered mobile phone, and any NADRA receipt or certificate you have. See our BISP Tehsil Office 2026 guide for how to find your office, and our BISP 8171 helpline number 2026 guide if you want to call 0800-26477 first.
All fix routes compared
| Route | Where | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retry on a clean day | Camp, office, agent point | Free | Device fault, wet or dirty hands |
| NADRA fingerprint update | NADRA Registration Centre | Not officially announced, take receipt | Worn prints, old record, repeated failure |
| Facial recognition certificate | NADRA, then BISP | Rs. 20, valid 7 days, as stated by NADRA | Prints that cannot match at all |
| BISP Tehsil Office | Your district BISP office | Free | Complaints, stuck cases, staff guidance |
Who faces this problem most
- Older women whose thumb ridges have worn down after years of manual work.
- Women who work in fields, brick kilns, kitchens or cleaning jobs.
- Women whose CNIC and fingerprint record are very old.
- Women who recently received a free SIM or are activating a wallet for the first time. The Benazir SIM 2026 guide covers that activation.
What happens to your payment while verification is stuck
Your installment stays reserved for you. Failure does not cut your name from the list, and it does not send the money to anyone else. When verification passes, you collect the pending payment. If a full quarter passes while your case is stuck, visit the Tehsil Office with your CNIC and ask staff to show your payment status on the system. Also confirm your status free on 8171.bisp.gov.pk or by SMS of your CNIC to 8171.
Do not let anyone hold your CNIC card, SIM or documents while they “fix” the problem. No fix route needs that.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Real cause | Exact fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thumbprint fails at camp | Dirty scanner, wet hands, worn print | Clean dry hands, second machine, then NADRA update |
| Fails after NADRA update | Record not yet updated, or tried too early | Wait 24 to 72 hours and retry once |
| Fails again and again | Print too worn to ever match | NADRA facial certificate, Rs. 20, 7 days, then BISP |
| CNIC expired | Verification blocked on an invalid card | Renew CNIC at NADRA first |
| Facial certificate expired | Used after 7 days | Get a fresh certificate and go to BISP the same week |
| Camp closed or machine down | Camp schedule or power issue | Ask office for the next camp date, try the office device |
| Agent says pay to fix | Fraud, no such fee exists | Refuse. Go to NADRA or the Tehsil Office, call 0800-26477 |
| SIM in another name | Wallet links to the woman’s own SIM | Correct the SIM. See our BISP 8171 update mobile number 2026 guide |
Fraud warning
No agent, shopkeeper or middleman can fix a failed fingerprint. The only records that matter are in NADRA and BISP systems, and only NADRA and BISP staff can change them. Never pay for a fingerprint fix, never share your CNIC number, wallet PIN or OTP with anyone, and never hand your CNIC card to a stranger. BISP messages come only from 8171. Read our 8171 fraud alert 2026 guide for the scripts in use, and report anyone who asks for money on 0800-26477.
Who this guide cannot help
This guide cannot change your NADRA or BISP record, and it cannot complete verification for you. Only NADRA staff update fingerprints and issue facial certificates, and only BISP staff clear a case in the BISP system. If your name is not in the programme at all, this is not a verification problem; ask the Tehsil Office about survey and eligibility instead.
FAQs
What should I do first when my BISP fingerprint verification fails?
Wash and dry your hands, clean the scanner, and retry on a second machine with the same thumb NADRA holds. If proper tries still fail, do not keep retrying at camps. Go to NADRA for a fingerprint update. That record fix solves most repeated failures, and it is the route BISP itself advises.
Does a failed fingerprint mean my BISP payment is cancelled?
No. A failed verification pauses the payment. It does not cancel it, cut your name, or give the money to anyone else. Your installment stays reserved in the programme under your CNIC. Once your verification passes at NADRA or BISP, you can collect the pending payment.
How do I update my fingerprints at NADRA?
Take your original CNIC to a NADRA Registration Centre and ask for a fingerprint update for BISP verification. Staff scan your fingers again and replace the prints on your record. Keep the printed receipt. Wait 24 to 72 hours for the update to settle, then do BISP biometric verification again.
How much does the NADRA fingerprint update cost?
NADRA has not officially announced a fee for the beneficiary fingerprint update, so do not trust a fixed price from any agent or blog. Ask at the NADRA counter before the work starts, pay only against a printed NADRA receipt, and never pay a middleman. The facial recognition certificate fee of Rs. 20 has been stated by NADRA.
What is the facial recognition option if fingerprints never match?
NADRA issues a facial recognition certificate for beneficiaries whose biometric verification fails. As stated by NADRA in January 2026, the fee is Rs. 20 and the certificate is valid for 7 days. Take it to BISP within that time so your verification is completed by face instead of thumbprint.
Can my son or husband do the verification for me?
No. Biometric verification is personal. The thumbprint or face must be of the woman beneficiary named on the CNIC, and she must be present herself. A son, husband or any other person cannot verify in her place, and any shop offering that is breaking the rules and risking her record.
Can I withdraw from an ATM while my fingerprint is failing?
No. ATM and agent withdrawals need the same biometric match, so a failing print blocks them too until the record is fixed. Our BISP ATM Withdrawal 2026 guide explains the normal process. Fix the NADRA record first, then withdraw, and never share your PIN with the agent.
How long does the full fix take?
The NADRA visit itself is one trip. After the fingerprint update, wait 24 to 72 hours before BISP verification again. The facial certificate route needs two trips close together, to NADRA and then to BISP inside 7 days. No official total time is announced, so plan for a few days, not weeks.
What if BISP staff refuse to help at the Tehsil Office?
Ask for your complaint to be recorded against your CNIC and note the staff name and date. Then call the free BISP helpline 0800-26477 and report the case with those details. You can also check your status on 8171.bisp.gov.pk. Staff refusal is not the end of your case.
Conclusion
A failed BISP fingerprint is a record problem, not the end of your payment. Clean and retry once, update your fingerprints at NADRA, use the facial certificate if prints cannot match, and let the Tehsil Office record any stuck case. Keep your CNIC and receipts, ignore anyone who charges for a fix, and call 0800-26477 if you get stuck.
